The Premier League’s Unpopular Powerhouses: An In-Depth Survey Reveals the Most Despised Teams Among Fans

The Most Annoying Fans: A Look into Premier League Fanbases on Social Media

It’s no secret that the Premier League, attracting an estimated 640 million viewers worldwide, is the most-watched sports league globally. Football fans and Premier League bettors alike thoroughly enjoy supporting their chosen clubs, especially when it comes to rivalries. But which fanbases reign supreme in terms of annoyance, delusion, and intelligence? We conducted a survey among 2,000 Premier League football fans to find out.

Who Tops the Chart?

Based on our survey results, three teams, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United, emerge as prominent figures across multiple categories. Liverpool takes the crown for the most annoying fans, with 19.9% of respondents expressing their frustration. Meanwhile, Arsenal leads the pack for deluded fans, with 22.5% of supporters holding on to unwavering optimism despite their team’s recent struggles. On the other hand, Manchester United’s fanbase is deemed the least intelligent, according to 8.9% of survey participants. In terms of being disliked, Liverpool takes the top spot again with 18.0% of respondents expressing distaste for the club.

The Link between Success and Fanbase Reputation

It comes as no surprise that these fanbases, which received significant votes in each category, belong to historically successful clubs. Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal have clinched a combined total of 52 league titles since 1889, cementing their status as the most successful Premier League teams. Their extensive fan following, as well as their fair share of detractors, has been cultivated over decades of triumphs and setbacks.

Examining Social Media Annoyance

Most Annoying Fans on Social Media

In the age of social media, the banter and provocation between rival fans have reached new heights. Using our survey data, we identified the teams with the most-annoying fans on social media:

  • Liverpool – 19.9%
  • Arsenal – 19.6%
  • Manchester United – 15.4%
  • Chelsea – 9.5%
  • Manchester City – 8.0%

Both Liverpool and Arsenal vie for the top spot in this category, with only a minuscule margin separating them. Surprisingly, Manchester United fans are divided in their annoyance, with 49.5% of them naming Liverpool fans as the most irritating, while 38% direct their annoyance towards Arsenal supporters.

Fan Delusion on Social Media

Arsenal fans prove to be the most deluded on social media, despite the club’s lack of recent success. With their last Premier League title dating back to 2004, Arsenal supporters maintain an unwavering belief that “this is their year.” The survey results for the most deluded fans are as follows:

  • Arsenal – 22.5%
  • Liverpool – 13.0%
  • Tottenham Hotspur – 11.0%
  • Manchester United – 8.8%
  • Chelsea – 7.5%

Tottenham Hotspur also garners a significant number of votes, reflecting the eternal optimism of their fans despite their last top-flight title victory in 1961.

Intelligence of Fanbases

Arsenal fans, often accused of being deluded, unfortunately, receive the title of having the least intelligent fanbase. The survey results for the least intelligent fans are as follows:

  • Arsenal – 14.2%
  • Liverpool – 13.9%
  • Manchester United – 8.9%
  • Chelsea – 8.8%
  • Aston Villa – 7.0%

It’s worth mentioning that Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton fans, despite their clubs’ lack of success and presence in the lower half of the survey, can potentially make a case for the most intelligent fanbases. Both clubs have maintained a modest following and received less than 2% of the votes in this category.

The Most Disliked Team

As the old saying goes, success breeds jealousy. Our survey sought to identify the team that fans dislike the most:

  • Liverpool – 18.0%
  • Manchester United – 14.2%
  • Arsenal – 12.4%
  • Manchester City – 10.3%
  • Chelsea – 9.1%

Unsurprisingly, the teams with the most top-flight titles, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal, gather the most dislikes. Manchester City’s recent success, winning three out of the last four league titles, has elevated them to the dislike list. Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur, despite their lack of recent title victories, still manages to finish 6th overall, suggesting that there are factors beyond winning titles that contribute to a team’s unpopularity.
